Marriage Equality Vigil
March 23 , 2013

Pennsylvania Diversity Network Organized
Lehigh Valley Candlelight Vigil for Marriage Equality
in Advance of the Supreme Court DOMA Decisions -- Saturday, March 23, 6:30pm to 7:30pm at the Federal Court House, 504 Hamilton Street (5th and Hamilton) in Allentown. Organized by Pennsylvania Diversity Network in partnership with Equality Pennsylvania and Eastern PA PFLAG.

Over 150 people braved freezing temperatures to show support for marriage equality at a vigil organized by Pennsylvania Diversity Network on March 23, in front of the federal courthouse in Allentown.
“Hundreds of vigils and marches in support of the Supreme Court overturning DOMA happened in all 50 states. Our vigil, with over 150 people representing diversity in age, race, gender, national origin, and orientation, along with a series of significant speakers, was hugely successful in showing the Lehigh Valley’s support of equality for gay and lesbian families,” said Liz Bradbury, Executive Director of PA Diversity Network.
“Poll after poll continues to show that more Americans support marriage equality,” said Adrian Shanker, President of Equality Pennsylvania, who also spoke at the vigil. “It’s time for marriage for all Americans, and for all Pennsylvanians.”
The vigil’s keynote speaker Barb Baus explained that one of the cases to heard by the SCOTUS, the United States v. Windsor, is about the unfair tax burden same-sex spouses must pay when their legally married spouse dies. Baus said this mirrors her own situation. She told the hushed crowd that her legally married wife Cathy Burgi died last year, and that, “the state of Pennsylvania is treating me as a total stranger to Cathy, my partner of 15 years, by requiring me to pay the 15% inheritance tax.” Baus went on to explain that heterosexual spouses pay no inheritance tax and added, “I sincerely hope the Supreme Court follows the President's suggestion and finds DOMA unconstitutional.”
The speakers at the event were:
Liz Bradbury, Executive Director, Pennsylvania Diversity Network,
Adrian Shanker, President, Equality Pennsylvania
Barb Baus, widow effected by the so-called "Defense of Marriage Act"
Rev. Peter Bredlau, Evangelical Lutheran Church Minister, Bethlehem
Kevin Deely, Representative of Lehigh Valley Labor Council
The Hon. Julio Guridy, President of Allentown City Council
Allyson Diane Hamm, Chair, Human Relations Commission of the City of Allentown
The Hon. J. William Reynolds, Bethlehem City Councilmember
Rev. Joy Wyler, Senior Minister, Unity of Lehigh Valley, PA
